Kolkata Airport to Shut Airport from 8:30 a.m., No Airports in Odisha as Hurricane Yaas Comes to Storm, IMD Director-General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said 'Yaas' is likely to intensify into a Severe Storm ( VSCS) on Tuesday evening and Chandbali is likely to see the extensive damage caused by it.

     Bhubaneswar Airport in Odisha has been closed since 11pm on Tuesday, and Bengal airport in Kolkata will close from 8.30am on Wednesday to 7.45pm as Yaas Storm will cross between Dhamra Port and Balasore on the Odisha coast. At midday it was a fierce storm. The storm is expected to hit the east coast at a wind speed of up to 185 km per hour, and will cross over to Bengal.

     Sanjeev Banerjee, director of India's Department of Environment, warned that residents of the two eastern states could see power lines and trees removed, while low-lying areas would be flooded and there would be little visibility. He added that they had stopped fishing and had been evacuated to coastal areas.

Dr Umashankar Das, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Center, Bhubaneswar said the landslide could be between Dhamra and Chandbali in the region. IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said 'Yaas' could strengthen into the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) on Tuesday evening and Chandbali could see the serious damage caused by it. He said the impact would be greater for six hours before and after the collapse.

     The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has set its top teams to be sent to Odisha and West Bengal as part of its preparations for the upcoming Yaas storm, a senior official said on Tuesday. The emergency services has committed 113 teams to be sent to five provinces and to the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is expected to be affected by the storm in the Bay of Bengal. Of these, the highest of the 52 teams nominated by Odisha was followed by 45 teams in West Bengal.

     West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee said the West Bengal government had made all the necessary preparations to deal with the effects of Hurricane Yaas, which could affect 20 states. Speaking at a press conference, Banerjee said the government intended to move at least 10 lakh people to safer areas to avoid loss of life. "The impact of Typhoon Yaas will far exceed Amphan, according to the data we have received so far. This will affect at least 20 regions in West Bengal.  The south 24 parganas ,the provinces of kolkata,north and south,purba medinipur will be severely affected by this Yaas cyclone as he added.

Odisha : ALERT 

More than three lakh people have been evacuated from the low-risk and vulnerable areas of Odisha, as the country's calculation of hurricanes on Wednesday began. The relocation process will be completed tonight, said Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena.

The state has 860 permanent residences and 6,200 temporary residences identified where 7 to 8 lakhs can be safely lived in accordance with the COVID law, he said. Odisha Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik held a meeting to assess the state of the storm in the province which has already begun to affect lives in coastal regions as heavy rains were blown by winds at a speed of about 60 kmph.
